Back in January, I was asked to create a teaser image for the upcoming Kahn Vengeance Volante - a coachbuilt take on an Aston Martin DB9. There was only one problem but it was a pretty valid one; the car didn't exist yet.
So, how do you go about creating an image of a car that doesn't exist and with no 3D data?
I was fortunate enough to shoot the coupe a year earlier for its' Geneva debut, so that became the starting point.
Having approached the designers at Kahn, all that was available at that time of the Volante was a sketch, so this was overlaid on top of the coupe image.
With both images aligned, it was time to erase the parts we didn't want to show. This meant eliminating as much of the detail as possible while still retaining enough to make it interesting. It also means crushing the blacks so that people can't lift the shadows and undo your hard work!
With some colour-grading, lens flare and smoke effects to make the image look more dramatic, as well as some refinement to the sketch areas.
After some final tweaks the teaser was good to go and awarded 'Photo of the day' on the FStoppers site, a nice little bonus to a job done under difficult circumstances! It was also picked up by the usual Motoring press including Top Gear, Evo and Pistonheads.
